Carousel.nyc sells for $7,000

I originally posted back in July about my 4 year .nyc domain investing experience and recently followed up that article with news of 4 more .nyc domain sales that took me over the $20,000 sales mark. There was one sale however, that pushed me over the break even line and that was carousel.nyc which completed just a few weeks ago for $7,000. Up until recently my biggest .nyc domain sales were $3,000 (x 2 sales) and $3,090 so it was nice to exceed those with this sale. Maybe there's time for one more big sale before the year's up! I received an email about this domain about a month ago from a gmail account with no history and so I was intrigued about who it may be interested. After a couple of emails they said that they had decided to go in a different direction - so we both moved on. Fast forward a few weeks later and I received an email from Afternic congratulating me on the sale of carousel.nyc. I was excited but also nervous because of only one other domain sa…

NYC domains are selling – I just broke even!

Earlier this year I wrote about my 4 year experience investing in .NYC domain names. I described my annual quest to reach the $15,000 mark, at which point the profits from my domain sales would equal my renewal costs. Since the launch of the .NYC domain extension back in October 2014 this had been a difficult, yet expected challenge. There were (and still are) so many great .nyc domain names that my domain portfolio swelled and still grows each year. There was also my additional investment in registering available domain names and in 2017 I snapped up about 50 premium .nyc domains as they became available (in a day I spent $12,000+ on those names). As with most investments, a return isn't made overnight. It takes time to bake! Many of the premium domains that I paid between $265 and $600 for did receive decent offers, I just felt they weren't at fully cooked prices. If I'd have accepted them, I may have broken even for the year but would definitely have left money…

An Investor’s Experience with NYC Domains for 4 Years

Whenever I read an article, tweet, forum post or listen to a podcast that generalizes the death of the new TLDs I switch off. Not because I'm a big fan of all (or even many) new TLDs, but because: I have experience of new TLD sales, and a side of the story that isn't being represented as part of the new TLD discussion. I'm cynical that the author has an ulterior motive in protecting a .com portfolio or even in some cases the critic doesn't know how to seize an opportunity and so they become an opportunity killer. Today, I will share some information about my own .nyc domain name sales as well as my perspective on new TLDs. Maybe this article will provide a little balance or at least hopefully present information on sales in a geo-TLD niche and why we shouldn't group all new TLDs together. While I'm waiting for my car to be worked on for its inspection, I visited a Panera Bread to grab lunch and write this article. On entering I had to do a double take at their recruitm…

$335 Premium NYC Domain Name Sale

To celebrate the New Year and to help me focus a little more on key projects, I've separated 183 domain names and placed a $335 Buy It Now price on each of them. Welcome to the end of year NYC domain name sale. The categories of names include: Brandable, Products and Services 3 Letter Acronyms First Names Last Names Why the sell off? Although I've invested in domain names in the past, my accumulation of .NYCs wasn't planned. I was involved in the original .NYC auctions in October 2014 and was successful in outbidding everyone for a few domains including kids.nyc and students.nyc among others. Since then, I've picked up other premium names (including free.nyc) which have all had a financial toll. Until these projects are fully developed they won't be income generating and so my ongoing accumulation of .NYC domains has been both to flip (to fund my other projects) and because I keep discovering other great NYC domains that I want to ultimately develop!…

One of my favorite premium reserved .NYC domains now registered

Over 4,000 .NYC domains were previously reserved and became available a year ago on October 10th 2016. Although all .NYC domains have regular renewal prices ($20-30/year) the premium domains came with an initial premium registration fee ranging from $350 - $7,000 depending on the domain "tiers". Tiered pricing is slightly different at competing registrars and using GoDaddy as an example Tiers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 were priced at $7,000, $3,500, $1,400, $700 and $350 respectively. Well I've been watching one particular tier 1 ($7,000) domain for over a year - and it was just registered earlier today - and not by me! The domain was news.nyc. I think this name is amazing for many reasons. It's short, generic, meaningful. As an investment this type of name will only appreciate and will always be in demand. There are many end users who may be interested in the domain - newspapers, radio, TV. News.nyc could springboard a smaller business into the spotlight in terms of marketi…

One person spent $86,800* on 21 NYC domains

Just over a week ago I reported how Sex.nyc and Beautiful.nyc were both purchased by the same person, for about $7,000 and $3,500 respectively - well it now appears that this person has struck again. The spending spree started with sex.nyc and beautiful.nyc on October 22nd and continued through October 31st with additional 19 NYC domain name purchases, bringing the total spent to approximately $86,800. Below is the shopping list Domain Approx. Sex.nyc sells and so does Beautiful.nyc

Earlier today I noticed two premium NYC domain purchases - sex.nyc and beautiful.nyc. Both these domains were previously unregistered and were registered yesterday, directly with GoDaddy, as premium purchases. They've now been added to the NYC domain name sales chart. What's particularly notable about the sales is that they were purchased by the same person (whois) and that they sold for approximately $7,000 (sex.nyc) and $3,500 (beautiful.nyc). While not quite in the same league as Sex.com, which sold for $13m seven years ago (almost to the day - 10/27/2010) to a company called Clover Holdings Ltd., many may consider the $7,000 price tag reasonable. These prices haven't been confirmed by GoDaddy or the registrant, but I believe that they are accurate approximations based on the premium tiers that theses names were originally labeled as and the amount GoDaddy has been charging for NYC domains within the tiers.

Sex.nyc - Tie…

The State of .City Domain Names – Is .NYC on Top?

Back in June 2012 fewer than 40 cities applied for a TLD matching their name. This global Google map shows where they are:

NYC Tech Domains Auction Results

Following the Fashion themed NYC Premium Domain Auctions and the Real Estate themed Premium Domain Auctions, were the Tech related domain auctions which concluded today. At the end of the auctions it was a similar story the other auctions but without two domains selling in the 5 figures. This time web.nyc was at the top spot with bidding reaching $8,638. One reason for the apparent lack of excitement for these domains (with many selling at $500) is the fact that technology is more global than local so it may make sense that new startups, app builders, and even tech investors may shy away from building on the .NYC for tech-related projects where they expect to interact and market more globally. Take a look at the results below and leave a comment if you're feeling chatty!   Domain Name Price Sale Type Sale Venue Date Registered vc.nyc $1,750 Neustar Auction: Tech (#3) Snap Names May 18, 2017 connect.nyc $2,059 Neustar Auctio…

NYC Fashion Domains Auction Results

This was the second in a series of Premium .NYC Domain Auctions by Neustar and the City of New York and it concluded earlier today with two huge surprises. Firstly, who knew there is more money in fashion than real estate. The "Real Estate" themed NYC premium domain auctions last year in October made records with RealEstate.nyc and Apartments.nyc selling for $21,300 and $16,155 respectively. The Fashion themed auction proved it could do one better with Shop.nyc selling for $33,500 and Fashion.nyc selling for $37,000. The rest of the results are below and I'm curious who the sellers are and if they are an investor or someone with an end use in mind. Again there are some great names that sold for $500 and if the SnapNames auction app or mobile website worked properly (I was no where near a desktop) I would have had a few bids in for some of bargains!   Domain Name Price Sale Type Sale Venue Date Registered apparel.nyc $500 Neustar Au…

NYC Real Estate Domains Auctions Results

The first in a series of Premium .NYC Domain Auctions by Neustar and the City of New York has just concluded and I think we can say it was a success with a few surprises. Each of of the NYC premium auctions will contain around twenty domains that are connected by a theme. The auction that ended today contained domains relating to "Real Estate". RealEstate.nyc ($21,300) and Apartments.nyc ($16,155) were the front runners drawing significant bidding action. At the other end of the chart I was surprised to see brownstones.nyc, construction.nyc, coops.nyc, interiors.nyc and sublet.nyc all go at (or close to) the reserve price of $500. Especially when a name like Townhouse.nyc sold for $21,000 in the original Landrush Auctions in 2014.   Domain Name Price Sale Type Sale Venue Date Registered apartments.nyc $16,155 Neustar Auction: Real Estate (#1) Namejet October 28, 2016 brokers.nyc $1,908 Neustar Auction: Real Estate (#1) Nam…

112 NYC domains auctioned at Flippa ($3,870)

For a while it didn't look as though these domains were going to be sold as the Flippa auction wasn't meeting the reserve, but we have a winner at $3,780. What might facilitated shifting the domains was the well timed article in the New York Post titled Accountant Looks to make a Killing on .NYC Domain Names which was featured less than a month before. The seller was Recep Ozdincer who the Post states paid about $3,500 for the domains last year. The auction price reaching $3,870 made Recep a small profit and helped him avoid upcoming renewals of another $3,500. Congrats to both the buyer and seller - there are some nice names on the list.   Domain Name Price Notes Sale Type Sale Venue Date Registered abacus.nyc $3,780* Portfolio Sale: Price paid for 112 Domains Private Portfolio Auction Flippa July 22, 2015 annuities.nyc $3,780* Portfolio Sale: Price paid for 112 Domains Private Portfolio Auction Flippa July 22, 2015 …

NYC Domains Launch and Gross $749,542 – City Earns $299,817

It's been an exciting few weeks and as the .NYC Landrush Auctions concluded earlier today and the digital dust settled it the auctions had raised $749,542 with Neustar and the City of New York splitting the spoils 60:40 respectively. The total number of domains sold at auction was 1,011. The two steps of the Landrush Period as outlined in the NYC launch schedule were: August 4th to October 3rd 2014: Depending on registrar, registrants had to pay $70-100 for the Landrush application and keep their fingers crossed that no one else applied for the same domain during this period. If no second applicant the domain was theirs on October 3rd 2014 If a second person applied for the same domain, an auction would be conducted during one of three rounds depending on the first letter of the domain name: A – I: October 23 – 27, 2014 J – R: October 28 – 31, 2014 S – Z: November 3 – 6, 2014 "General Availability" (where anyone who attempted to register an avai…
