This is the second in a series of monthly articles detailing new .NYC domain registrations: looking at registration trends and categories, while also highlighting any premium .NYC domain registrations along with any obscure names I find. The NYC Open Data initiative was the original source of the NYC domain registration data.

February is an interesting month for domain registrations. It’s a short month and it follows one of the most depressing weeks of the year – one where resolutions have been broken and the credit card statements have arrived showing the full damage of the holiday spending.

February 2018 .NYC Domain Registrations

Total .nyc domain registrations added: 847

This is compared with January’s 875, but don’t forget February has 3 fewer days, so for a 10% drop in the number of days (31 to 28) we only saw a 3.2% drop in total new registrations (875 in Jan to 847 in Feb).

This compares with January’s 51%:49% INDIV:ORG ratio. Still a healthy mix but the shift is that more new registrants are identifying as organizations.

The following names were domains originally reserved by Neustar (the .NYC registry) and later made available at premium tiered pricing. The prices shown, are an estimation of sales price based on the description on the NYC domains sales chart page.

Although January only had 6 premium tiered purchase, it did include a $7,000 sale (seo.nyc) along with two $3,500 sales (church.nyc and lab.nyc) so was slightly more lucrative for the City of New York and Neustar. However, it’s in these premium names that we start to a the trend that continues through the notable domain names listed below – the increase registration of personal name .nyc domains.

Before we move into the notable domain registration tables, something that stood out to me this month is how protective registrants are being by registering close alternatives to their main domain. We’ve seen this since the start of the web: registrants registering the .com, .net and .org. Over time we’ve seen users register the singular and plural of their domains, even common typos. This type of defensive action can now be seen in .NYC domain registrations – but now I believe it is a clear message of the .NYC market, and the TLD maturing.

People are putting their money where their mouth is and this is very significant with the average .NYC costing $30 compared with $9 for a .com. So additional defensive registrations in a $30 domain more likely suggests that one of the two/three names will be developed and that the registrant is in it for the long haul and not simply speculating.

If we’re to separate the growth of the .NYC TLD I’d say we’re entering “early maturity”. We’ve left the “birth” and “infancy” eras. Take a look at my eras of the .NYC domainspace article for some analysis of the .NYC TLD and market has evolved.

The table below which shows all kinds of defensive registrations in the .NYC which I believe is a great sign of the .NYC domain maturing.

 

 

Other Notable .NYC Domain Registrations in February 2018

For the purpose of the monthly reviews, I screened the data, looking for notable domains that (1) make some sense and (2) fit easily into a category. While this obviously only categorizes a fraction of the 847 domains that were registered, this month it has left a more manageable list of 542 names that are an easier read and still valid for analysis.

 

Below is a table showing the breakdown of the 542 notable .NYC domain registrations.

The cells that are highlighted in pink show some new categories of domain that I noticed this month. These include addresses (usually containing a number and a street), a few names including the word “group“, moving services and phrase domains that begin with the word “the” and finally domains that have a religious/spiritual connection.

14 crypto related .nyc domains were registered during February which is a drop from the 24 names registered in January – Perhaps this isn’t surprising. Personally, I haven’t been involved in this space and have always been amazed when I see a group of crypto domains being registered in a local TLD because, unless the domain is for a meetup or local fanbase/resources, I don’t see the potential of crypto domains on a .NYC.

Ok so not a huge sample of “group” domains but I noticed them! I thought it was worth mentioning because organizations or companies with the word group in their name are either larger entities or are pretending to be larger than they are. These registrants made the choice to either be large on a .nyc domain name or pretend to be large on a .nyc domain. Either way, it’s a vote of confidence in .nyc.

This was a new category I added in the notable domains and although I’m certain these types of names have been registered in the past, there are just so many of them this month – 52 address related domains which accounts for 10% of the notable subgroup.

Looking through the list there are one or two developers who may have gone a little click happy when buying variations, but this also adds to the point of the defensive registrations that people will make when they feel good about a domainspace.

8 names clearly related to legal were registered this month (10 were registered last month). I believe that a law firm with a .nyc can benefit from these types of names because often the services need a visit to an office and .nyc assures potential clients that they’re not wasting time on a website of an attorney based in another state. I love one word, premium, call to action domain names in .nyc. This month I just completed the sale of a 4 letter, one word, premium, call to action domain for a $3,000. Will hopefully write about it soon. Also from the premium sales table at the top of the page you can see that all of the domains were either a first name or a one word domain.

I like many on those sold in this category: women.nyc, mega.nyc, forecast.nyc, straphangers.nyc (I think this is one word!), stereo.nyc, civic.nyc, blind.nyc and chill.nyc.

Many of these names were registered on the last day of February and so may be the same business owning the category, but it’s still worth a mention. These names represent 3% of the notable subgroup and if these are defensive/variation registrations than this supports my point that we’re moving into a new era of .nyc domains – early maturity.

Mirror related domains were popular this month, at least with one registrant who snapped up those names in the list. Product/service names are hard to argue against. If you offer photos in one hour, onehourphoto.nyc is a great domain name even if that isn’t exactly your business name. I believe this is an underrated category not just in SEO potential but in memorability, impact and customer sentiment.

The number of real estate related domains dropped in February from 21 names in January. Also it’s clear that the Taystee Building (current website TaysteeBldg.com) pushed those numbers up this month. slumlords.nyc is the domain that stands out to me – a one word, premium, emotion filled domain with a local meaningful TLD.

Church.nyc was the stand out premium domain that sold in January for ~$3,500. In February it’s the same owner of church.nyc who snapped up worship.nyc from the list above. From my research it doesn’t look like worship.nyc was a premium name and may have cost ~$30. Such a great domain – again a one word, call to action, premium .nyc domain.

Tech names continue to be registered but fewer than last month. Even the tech themed auctions back in May 2017 didn’t prove as successful as many thought. You may think that digitalsecurityforall.nyc should win the award for longest .nyc domain registered this month, but that award would go to brooklynmovingcompanies.nyc (23+.nyc) from the notable subgroup or manhattanvillefactorydistrict.nyc (29+.nyc) from all the domains registered in February.

Never a fan of the___ domain names especially in a geoTLD but this month there were many registrations. Perhaps this also indicates further maturity of the market or at least that the domain without the “the” was already taken.

Similar to one word premium domains, I really like meaningful two word domains. I imagine many of those on the list above as a .com would sell for $xx,xxx (e.g. soundbite, riseup, springboard, royalflush, verygood, urbantrails, megastore, makemoney, boardingpass, etc.) Now obviously these aren’t .coms and there isn’t an easy formula to say they’re worth 1/100th of the price of a .com, but in some situations if the cause or business is heavily attached to .nyc, then owning the phrase.nyc has a huge impact, possibly beyond that of the phrase.com.
